The Wii Rain Check-- sorry, "Wii Certificate" program Nintendo started with GameStop seemed like just the solution to the problem of low Wii supply and e-bay scalpers, didn't it? Too bad it apparently kind of blows.
As covered by Kotaku, Gamestop released the details of the program this morning... and, uh. Basically, you can ONLY pick up a "Certificate" on December 21st, you have to pay in full up front, and what you get in return is the DVD case pictured above. GameStop calls you when your Wii come in, which should be in January.
Kotaku sums up the lousiness of this offer quite well:
So let me get this straight, you give GameStop your $250 and they get to sit on it for a full month, earning interest, and in return you get an empty DVD case and eventually a Wii? The least they could have done is thrown in a T-Shirt that read: "My Parents Waited Too Long to Shop for Me So All I Got for Christmas was this Shirt and a Lot of Empty Promises. See you in Therapy in Five Years."

I thought Gamestop's distinct brand of evil would overpower Nintendo's otherwise well-meaning plan.
Man I dislike Gamestop. Why do they have so many games that I want to buy? Why must I pay an extra $5 markup over the MSRP of a copy of Cubivore because the employee was commanded to open a brand new copy so that it would become "used"? Why must I be offered the last remaining copy of Castle Shikigami 2 as an under-the-counter sale because the employee working there already called dibs on it (and decided to apply his own mark-up)?
