Isn't it strange, how Mario Kart Wii is quietly shuffling out between Brawl and Wii Fit? Shouldn't it be a bigger deal? Either Mario Kart Wii is a little disappointing, or Nintendo is banking big on Wii Fit.
What's interesting is how Nintendo is pushing Wii Fit to the masses. Moreso than any Nintendo product so far, Nintendo is not trying to sell this to gamers. Their biggest marketing campaign in history is going to be aimed squarely at upscale big box retailers like Target and Best Buy.
"(Wii Fit) is not aimed at hardcore gamers, but is instead intended for more casual and out-of-shape consumers," Pachter said. "We have learned that Nintendo of America intends to support the Wii Fit launch with the biggest marketing campaign in its history, and believe it is unlikely that such a large marketing campaign is intended to disproportionately benefit (game specialty retailer) GameStop."
In the UK, part of the promotion is a one-day March 26 display at the London Science Museum called "Play Away the Calories", which pits traditional exercise vs. Wii Fit vs. traditional video games to see which burns the most calories. (Hint: traditional exercise probably wins.) Still, it sounds like the event is going to have some promising speakers on hand.
Andy Jones, an epidemiologist from the University of East Anglia, will "examine how and why adult obesity has quadrupled in the last 25 years and will look at the role technology has played in creating a more sedentary life." Also presenting will be former Edge editor Margaret Robertson, who will discuss the history of "healthy gaming" and why it has failed to catch on in the past.
