My Poor Dead DS

Jul. 9 5:05 AM by Alicia Ashby

So in the comments thread over here, I mentioned that my previous DS quite literally disintegrated in my hands. I'm aware this is a fantastic claim, given the way Nintendo technology is known to be run over by tanks and still work fine, but I swear it happened! Hell, I'll do better than swear. I'll take pictures of my dead DS so you can see exactly how it broke yourselves.

As you can see here, the right hinge just sorta cracked and fell off it. That leaves very little holding the screens together, making it basically unplayable.

Now, to Nintendo's credit, my poor dead DS actually still works. See, proper picture display and everything! You just can't hold it in your hands.

Part of what's such a bummer with this DS breaking is the pic I took of the back here. Sorry for the blurriness, both my camera and skills kinda suck. At the 2007 E3, I got it signed by Zelda creator Eiji Aonuma after an interview about Phantom Hourglass. It's a little smudgey now because I loved my DS and kept playing it long after I should've retired it to a trophy case. It was still a cool memento to carry around with you, and I doubt I can get my new DS signed easily unless I carry a silver permanent marker around with me.

As you can see here, my new DS is the Cobalt Blue model! It looks great, trust me, but doesn't actually photograph on my lousy camera very well thanks to its dark coloring. I guess this will be the one that goes to L.A. with me this year, and I hope it doesn't suffer any spontaneous joint failure because of that.

That's really awful, since you had it signed.... I wonder what would have caused it to break like that? Sorry for your loss, but at least you got a new DS.

FAKED

FAKED LIKE THE MOON LANDING

I DISBELIEVE

Mine was signed the guy who made Orcs And Elves and I put it in my pocket and it scraped off. I would get it signed on the inside.

What? Ive dropped my ds down a flight of stairs and it still worked fine. What did you do to break that hinge?

My brother bit his top screen and caused it to suck.

That actually happened to my original DS Light too. I'm not sure if it's the occasional flaw in some of the original units as I've heard of others who've had this happen to them but it seems that sometimes the hinges can take the stress of opening and closing so many times before they break as shown.

I haven't heard of this happening to any of the newer colored models though so it may just be an issue with the earlier versions.

@KouAidou:

OKAY YOU GOT ME, ACTUALLY THIS WAS 11,000 HOURS IN MS PAINT

@smashbrosbrawler:

The crazy part is, as far as I know, nothing! I played it the day before it broke then closed it and hooked it up to the charger. It was lying on the carpet next to my Basket O' Controllers and so couldn't have fallen. When I picked it up the next day, I opened it up to play and then hinge just toppled off.

@FlashNeko:

Actually this _is_ a launch DS Lite, so I wonder if those are one of the few Nintendo products in history with an actual manufacturing defect?

I believe the launch DS Lites are also the ones that tend to have dead pixels.
