XSEED's New Nintendo Games @ E3 2008: Retro Game Challenge

Jul. 24 6:57 PM by Alicia Ashby

Retro Game Challenge: Retro Game Challenge is based on a Japanese game show where comedian Shinya Arino is forced to play really old, really hard, really hateful video games. Now you get chosen by the "Demon Arino" to suffer the torment of playing lousy old video games. Retro Game Challenge lets you play original-but-terribly-authentic NES-style shooters, racing titles, platformers, and even RPGs. Use "game magazines" and other helpful items in-games to try and meet all of Demon Arino's challenges, but be warned... eventually, he's going to expect you to beat these things.

The Hype: Game Center CX, the show Retro Game Challenge is based on, is tremendous fun to watch. A lot of the show's attitude shows up in the game, and the "recreations" of NES games at their most generic and inexplicable are hilariously dead-on.

The Snark: The joke behind this game is great, and it held up well for ten minutes or so I got to play it, but I'm left wondering if the gag will still be funny after, say, five hours or so.

Anyway, some retro-tastic screens behind the cut. The kids on the bottom screen represent "you".

So wait, is it bad? All the "Retro-Tastic" Screen have me droolin'!

"Bad" doesn't strike me as an applicable adjective. The games in the collection were designed, kind of brilliantly, to play like confusing and/or mediocre NES games. Retro Game Center is really, really good at this and I enjoyed the time I spent with it. I just wonder if it'll hold up for hours of play, or if the "joke" of playing new retro games that are authentically too-challenging and player-unfriendly is going to wear thin.

I don't know, people seemed to like Mega Man IX. :)

... Mega Man 9 is awesome, is why. >:/

Actually, tonight at my church I'm helping out at a video game night with my youth group. My friend's gonna break out his old Super NES and his collection of all the Mega Man X's! That and I also have to take down my other friend's Dad, who is a Galaga master (Best Galaga player I've ever seen), in Geometry Wars Galaxys. I'm a bit of a "Retro-Lover". lol

I never expected in a million years that we would get this game on our side of the ocean. I'm not complaining, mind, as the show is great and if this game can capture the spirit of it properly it should be funny.

Though I think this may be one of those games that how well it goes over may depend on if it's priced as a full or budget title.

I want to say XSEED is also involved in an attempt to release a localized version of the show, which cuts out all the non-Arino content and adds subtitles.
